- You must be aged 16 or over
- You must spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone who receives certain benefits because of a long-term illness or disability
- You must not be in full-time education
- Your income must be below a certain level
It's worth noting that Carers Allowance is not means-tested, but if you are receiving certain other benefits, it may affect how much you get, and if you are working and receiving Carers Allowance, you may be eligible for additional financial support through the Working Tax Credit and the National Insurance Credit.
It's important to check your eligibility with the DWP and to apply for Carers Allowance as soon as possible after you start caring for someone, as you can only claim Carers Allowance from the date of your claim and not from the date you started caring.
