What discounts for carers are out there?

Businesses, organisations and retailers are getting better and better at offering discounts for carers. In fact, you may be surprised at the sheer amount and type of discounts you could get if you care for someone. However, these discounts can depend on your circumstances such as where you live and the type of care you provide. Therefore, we always recommend that you check your eligibility for a discount first. We have listed a few discounts and benefits you could receive as a carer below.

Discounts for carers at the cinema
Some cinemas may offer free or discounts for carers who are accompanying someone who requires assistance due to a disability or medical condition. However, this varies depending on the cinema and their specific policies. You can check with your local cinema to see if they offer any special discounts or policies for unpaid carers. You may need to provide proof of your status as an unpaid carer, such as a Carer ID Card, Carer's Allowance or a letter from a doctor or social worker. There is also the option of purchasing what is known as a CEA card. These are issued through a national scheme run by the UK Cinema Association. More information about a CEA card.

Discounts for carers at the theatre
Like cinemas, some theatres may offer discounts for carers who are accompanying someone who requires assistance due to a disability or medical condition. These discounts may vary depending on the theatre and the specific production, so it's best to check with the theatre directly to see what offers or policies they have in place. To claim a carer's discount at the theatre, you may need to provide proof of your status as a carer, such as a Carers ID Card, Carer's Allowance or a letter from a doctor or social worker. Although there’s no nationally recognised scheme, like cinemas have with the CEA card, you may still find some do offer discounts for carers if they are accompanying the person they are caring for. Some theatres may also offer special seating arrangements or other accommodations for carers and those they are caring for.

Discounts for carers at English Heritage
English Heritage cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites across the UK. They don’t currently offer discounts for carers but carers can access these sites for free if they’re accompanying someone with a disability or medical condition. Therefore, to gain free access you will need to prove that you care for someone. The person you are accompanying will also need to pay for their entry unless they’re a member of English Heritage. English Heritage also offers additional support and facilities for visitors with disabilities or medical conditions, including accessible toilets, mobility equipment hire, and audio guides with hearing loops.

Discounts for carers at the National Trust
The National Trust gives people access to over 500 historic properties, gardens, and countryside sites across the UK. Just like the English Heritage the National Trust doesn’t currently provide specific discounts for carers. However, they do provide free entry to carers who are accompanying someone with a disability or medical condition. Therefore, if you wish to visit one of their sites you will need to provide proof of your status as a carer, such as a Carers ID card, Carer's Allowance or a letter from a doctor or social worker. The person you are accompanying will need to pay for their entry unless they’re a member of the National Trust. The National Trust also offers additional support and facilities for visitors with disabilities or medical conditions, including accessible toilets, mobility equipment hire, and audio guides with hearing loops.

Discounts for carers at RHS gardens and shows
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is a charity organisation that promotes horticulture and gardening. The RHS owns four gardens in the UK, including the world-famous RHS Garden at Wisley, and holds numerous gardening events, including the Chelsea Flower Show. Gardens that are run by the RHS offer either discounts for carers or free entry to accompanying carers. Please bear in mind that some RHS sites and events do not offer any discounts at all, meaning you will need to pay the full entry fee. Therefore, we always recommend that you check first with the location you are interested in visiting first.

Discounts for carers at theme parks
Some theme parks may offer discounts for carers or even free entry for carers who are accompanying someone who requires assistance due to a disability or medical condition. However, policies and discounts vary depending on the theme park, so it's best to check with the park directly to see what offers or policies they have in place. However, all of the theme parks run by the Merlin group, which include Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures and LEGOLAND® Windsor, allow you to claim one free carer ticket if you go with someone with a disability. In order to receive the ticket you will need to provide proof that you care for someone. This will be checked at the kiosk or even when you book your tickets online. If the person you care for regularly visits Merlin owned theme parks then we would recommend that they purchase a Merlin Annual Pass. This way they can also claim a free carer pass at the same time.

Discounts for carers at sporting events
Some sporting events may offer discounts or free entry for carers who are accompanying someone who requires assistance due to a disability or medical condition. However, policies and discounts vary depending on the event and the specific venue, so it's best to check with the event or venue directly to see if they provide discounts for carers. For example, there are football clubs across the UK that offer discounts for carers on their matchday tickets. Some even provide free access to an accompanying carer. Each sports club is different so it’s always best to check first. If they do offer a discount or subsidised ticket for carers then you’ll certainly need to provide proof of your status as a carer. You can do this in several ways including showing your Carer's Allowance or a letter from a doctor or social worker.

5 top tips for getting discounts
1. Try signing up for newsletters and loyalty programs. Many retailers offer exclusive discounts and promotions to their email subscribers and loyalty program members. Signing up for these programs can help you get access to discounts and special offers.

2. Sign up to Carers Card UK as we have a discounts for carers section which provides you with discount codes and coupons for various retailers in the UK. These codes can help you get significant savings on your purchases.

3. Try to do your shopping during sales and clearance events. Retailers often offer discounts and promotions during sales and clearance events and these events can be a great opportunity to get good deals on items you want.

4. Take a look at cashback websites such as TopCashback and Quidco as they offer cashback on purchases made through their websites. You can earn a percentage of your purchase price back as cashback, which can add up to significant savings over time.

5. If you're confident enough then try to negotiate on prices. If you're buying a big-ticket item, try negotiating the price with the retailer. Many retailers are willing to negotiate prices to make a sale, especially if you're a repeat customer.
